2018 Goals – Simplify and Strengthen

Happy New Year! This is my favorite time of the year (I think I probably say that once a month…) not because of the weather, because of all of the possibility. No matter how hard you try, it’s impossible not to think of what 2018 could potentially be and where you could end up. New job? New adventures? Traveling the world? It’s up for you to decide and that sort of power makes me feel a little like a villain from a Disney Channel movie.

This year, without planning it, my goals seem to have a general theme. Simplify and Strengthen. I think over the course of 2017, I was trying to throw so many things on my plate at once, this year I’m hoping to get back to basics and strengthen myself physically and mentally as I go.

Here’s a few of my goals for 2018, most are very concrete, and others are more overall themes for how I want to live out the year. I usually like to keep goals really precise, but sometimes it’s nice to have a general direction and run with it.

Read 26 Books

Last year I went for 50 and that was a bit reaching. 26 would be a book every other week, something that seems a lot more doable with a crazy schedule. I’ll post a book list later on this week of titles already on my list, but I would love recommendations!

How it’ll get done

I like to read at lunch, usually walking on the treadmill, so that adds some serious time under my bookworm-belt. Plus, if I can consistently read even 10 minutes in the morning before work that will be over an hour a week. I also keep track on Goodreads of all the books I want to read and have read for the last year to help me stay on track!

Meditate Daily

There’s so much research and backing behind meditation. Focusing silently and without distraction has done wonders for everyone whose tried it, so this year I’m going to try and give it a go. I used to do it as part of my miracle morning, so hopefully as I start that back up this year meditation will be a staple.

How it’ll get done

Every morning I’m planning on doing the miracle morning routine before work, which includes 10 minutes of meditation. There’s a lot of great self-guided meditation videos on youtube (one of my faves) or apps to help me get in the routine. I’ve heard Headspace is great, but it’s a little pricey for me.

Work Out 3x A Week

I’m sure this is on everyone’s list as always. The beginning of the year is a good time to hit reset and get back to the reps. I think it’s always important though to make sure you don’t overwhelm yourself. Find something you love and do it a regular amount. If you tell yourself you’re going to spend an hour in the gym everyday even though you hate it, you’re setting yourself up for failure.

How it’ll get done

Hot yoga, workouts at lunch, Blogilates on youtube for the days I’m too lazy to make it to the gym, and I really want to get back in to running. I think it’s good to find things that you love and things that you can do even when you don’t have a lot of motivation. Blogilates is a youtube workout channel that combines the exercise of Pilates with the easiness of Netflix. Even when I’m struggling to get off the couch, I can always turn it on for a quick 20 minute workout in my PJ’s.

Get Back in to Routines

The easiest way for me to get a new habit to stick is get back in to routines. Weekly routines for each aspect of my life (cleaning, blogging, etsy, social media) helps me keep up with all of the daily tasks and not get too far behind. Plus if it’s small things done on a daily basis it’s a lot less overwhelming for me.

How it’ll get done

I use different colored markers and an agenda to write down each weekly calendar. Calendar include life, Etsy, Blog, Work, Workouts, Cleaning. I’ve been working on how to break up the weekly workload into daily segments for a while, but I think that’s something that will change as the year goes on depending on how things go.

Last one I’ll share right now is to travel more. We always have a goal of 3 new places together, and so far that won’t be too difficult. Last year we did well over 3 (Colorado, Arizona, US Road Trip, Boston) and each one offered a whole new experience, challenge, and a million memories.

How it’ll get done

We already have Iceland (whaaaat) and Washington DC booked for the year, and I’m sure we’ll make some camping and hiking trips happen hopefully as well!

What’s your biggest goal for 2018?!

Let me know what you think!
